Boy Scout Troop 303 honored Roger Clayton Greer III (Trey) for reaching Eagle Rank at the Court of Honor held Jan. 17 at Camp Hope. Trey is a junior at Lumpkin County High School and the son of Georgia and Roger Greer of Dahlonega. Trey and his family have enjoyed every minute of this shared adventure and are looking forward to life’s next stepping-stones ahead, said Trey’s dad. “Times moves so fast; only yesterday we were taking family hikes, and Trey was working on his Junior Ranger Programs in the National Parks,” said Trey’s mom.

Trey started focusing on scouting as a Webelo in 5th Grade, earning his “Arrow of Light” before crossing-over to boy scouts in February 2004. “I saw scouting as a wonderful tool to have more father-son time as my son continued to grow and develop into a young man. We did not understand how much Trey would grow in charter and leadership through his experiences in scouting,” said Roger Greer.

Trey loves the outdoors-hiking, biking, kayaking, climbing and backpacking. He also enjoys sharing his life experience with others, teaching them what he has learned and coaching others along the way. He has led many outdoor adventures for his Troop. For the past three summers he has worked at Camp Woodruff teaching younger scouts their first scout skills and field sports. “During his journey, Trey has developed into a great role model and leader,” said his dad and troop leader Roger Greer.

The ideal scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. According to Trey’s parents, he reflects all these values and uses them as a compass to help guide his life. “We have seen him encourage his friends to live by these values. Trey is a true scout 24/7,” they said.

Trey continues to receive praise for his character from community leaders, his teachers and peers year after year, said Trey’s father. Among awards he has earned are: Student of the Month, November 2004; Teacher’s Choice Award, 2004-05; Citizenship Award, 2005-06; Student of the Month, April 2008; Landscape Design Award, 2007-08; Purple & Gold Top 10 Percent of Class, May 2008; Laws of Life Essay Contest, Honorable Mention, 2008-09; Geometry Award, 2008-09; Construction Award, 2008-09; Purple & Gold Top 10 Percent of Class, May 2009; Scholar Athlete, 2009; Most Improved Cross Country Award, 2007; Cross Country Coaches Award, 2008; Most Valuable CC Runner Award, 2009; 1st Place in the Gold Rush Race, 2009.

Trey serves in his church youth leadership team, serves as a local boy scout troop leader, maintains a high grade point average, runs on the high school cross-county team and, on the side, has developed an interest in computers and Website design. He has built the BSA Troop 303 Website, the Summit Youth Website at Dahlonega Baptist and the Lumpkin Family Connection site. In addition, he works with the middle school After-School Program leading outdoor activities once a week.

Rising through the ranks of scouting, Trey has built upon a foundation of scouting ideals: faith, truth, integrity, honor, patriotism and self-reliance. He has learned to be prepared, do a good turn daily, live with a duty to God and servicing others and treat others the way he would like to be treated, said his dad.

To become an Eagle Scout, candidates must complete all rank requirements for Scout, Tenderfoot, 2nd Class, 1st Class, Star, Life, and Eagle; and earn at least 21 merit badges (12 required and 9 elected merit badges), demonstrate leadership within the troop and live by the Scout Law. In addition, he must receive six letters of recommendation from community leaders and organize and lead a community service project.

Trey led a crew of volunteers and other scouts who built four bench swings at Yahoola Creek Park. The project was approved in February 2009, and completed in September 2009. Community support and donations were received from ACE Hardware, Home Depot, and Chestatee Property Management. Completion of the project took over five work days and over 362 man-hours with over 18 volunteers and over $1,100 dollars of donated materials. Trey passed his Eagle Board on Oct. 22 and got his national final approval in November.

“After six years as a scout, five summer camps, 30 merit badges, and eight months of Eagle project planning and action, I reached my goal,” said Trey. Only five percent of Scouts attain the highest rank of the Boy Scouts of America, Eagle Scout.
